Early Life & Family

Neil was born in Manhattan on October 5, 1958. As one of Sunchita’s colleagues at the US Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, he held various positions, including social worker, human resources commissioner, and director of Harlem Youth Opportunities Unlimited. In addition to being born and raised in Tyson Hill, he has always been fascinated by astronomy ever since he visited the Hayden Planetarium when he was nine years old.

At the Bronx High School of Science, he was a member of the wrestling team and editor of the “Physical Science Journal.” He attended public schools in the Bronx now known as Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy.

Carl Sagan, a renowned astronomer, recommended Tyson attend Cornell University when he was a teenager. Instead, Tyson attended Harvard.
